| 13th April 2018 |Cape Town has a veritable buffet of food markets and fine dining establishments, both bound to bring your taste buds to life savouring the delectable organic fare, dishes infused with chef’s creations and tastes and wines filled with olfactory scents to enliven the senses.
Why not start your stay with a day visit to our infamous Root 44 Market. Set under marquees, surrounded by vineyards and shady trees, you can stroll through the vendors’ stalls offering a wide range of antiques, clothing, jewellery, leather goods and other arts and crafts to spoil those back home with a little piece of South Africa. Had enough of shopping? Wander the stalls and tempt yourself with nose-tingling, mouth-watering aromas of Cape Malay dishes, wood-fired pizzas and other traditional food endemic to our country. Refresh your parched throats with local wines and craft beers or soft drinks while the kids run off to play and enjoy the freedom of open spaces and the wood playpark, there for their entertainment, all while listening to the rhythms of local bands.
Return to your villas or apartments to refresh and then step out into the night and reserve yourself a table at Villa 47 on the Bree Street mile. Treat yourself to a gastronomic experience of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Third-generation Michelin-starred chef Theo Penati, has opened Pierino Penati on the third floor of Villa 47 and is ready to wine and dine you with Italian ingredients and dishes while pairing champagne menus to compliment the seasonal menus offered.
While staying in one of Capsol’s many luxury villas or apartments, fill you fridges with fresh, organic produce from The Oranjezicht City Market; one of few food markets situated in the heart of the city. The market is a non-profit project working towards the improvement of the City Bowl’s open, green spaces, to be better utilised in providing for the community. Crunchy, fresh produce can be purchased for those morning juices while starting your day off or chilled zesty salads for relaxed lunch settings on the balcony.
After a relaxed lunch, perhaps now you’re ready for a more extravagant affair and for this we highly recommend La Colombe for dining excellence. La Colombe boasts two popular restaurants, La Colombe Constantia and La Petite Colombe Franschoek and could be the perfect lunch or early dinner venue. Take a table and appreciate their beautiful settings in our Cape’s contrasting wine valleys after a small food market tour in the city, a lovely end to the day for the wine connoisseur and dedicated epicurean. Boasting awards received in 2017: World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards (73rd position); Trip Advisor 10 Fine Dining Restaurants in the World (7th position) and many others, we are proud of the achievements made by the chefs of this fine dining venue. You will be spoilt for choice with their menu and we suggest for connoisseur diners that you try their Gourmand Menu and truly treat yourselves.
Need to escape the city for a Sunday? Visit the Lourensford Market nestled in the Helderberg Basin on the Lourensford Wine Estate, established in 1709. Wander the avenues leading to the market, dotted with locally inspired and designed statues. Meander into the Art Curator Gallery to ponder SA artists of yesteryear and today or the Life Retreat Lifestyle Shop all before purchasing delicious foods at over 70 stalls and other pop-ups, displaying smoked charcuterie products, delectable confectioneries and cooling liquid refreshments. If you fancy a more idyllic setting than the market to sup on your wares, move into the surrounding gardens with picnic tables set amongst a profusion of flora and ancient trees with the tranquil sounds of the stream passing through.
